New  Dubai:

Dubai is one of the seven emirates that are part of the Federation of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The name is sometimes used to designate the emirate's main city, which is occasionally referred to As Dubai City. Dubai is the most populous - approximately 1.7 million of the UAE's 5 million population - and second largest emirate of the UAE after Abu Dhabi, the capital.

Its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to reach AED 174.6 billion for 2009, approximately one-third of the UAE's GDP. Dubai is distinct from other members of the UAE in that revenues from oil account for only 6 per cent of its gross domestic product.

Large scale construction projects have transformed Dubai into one of the fastest growing cities in the world and its iconic buildings – including the tallest building in the world and signature development such as The World and The Palm man-made islands – are globally recognized. The Burj al-Arab, located on its very own island in the Arabian Gulf, remains one of the symbols of the new Arabia.

Old  Dubai:

There are records of the town of Dubai from 1799. Earlier in the 18th century the Al Abu Falasa lineage of the Bani Yas clan established itself in Dubai, which was at the time a dependent of the settlement of Abu Dhabi until 1833.

The town of Dubai was an important port of call for foreign traders, mainly from the subcontinent, who settled in the town. Until the 1930s, the town was known for its pearl exports.

After the devaluation of the Gulf Rupee in 1966, Dubai joined the newly independent state of Qatar to set up a new monetary unit, the Qatar/Dubai riyal. Oil was discovered 120 kilometres off the coast of Dubai, after which the town granted oil concessions.

On 2 December 1971 Dubai, together with Abu Dhabi and five other emirates, formed the United Arab Emirates after former protector Britain left the Arabian Gulf in 1971. In 1973, Dubai joined the other emirates to adopt a single, uniform currency: the UAE dirham.
